Too Long

Its been a while. I read something interesting and I wanted to share it. It appears that ESPN female reporter Erin Andrews has run into some trouble. Not the haha funny jokes or stabs that she is a woman in a man's world (sports journalism) but it looks like she has been assaulted. Andrews privacy was violated recently at a hotel and it looks like this may greatly deter women from the world of sports journalism. Check this out: (use copy and then paste into your browser) Anyway I think this sucks and is a real shame. I hope that women continue to pursue careers in sports journalism and that they dont let this incident scare them off. As an aspiring sports journalist I think women help add diversity to the show or segment or whatever. Its sad that certin individuals have to ruin a good thing for everybody else.

Summer Radio

So Andrew and myself conducted a few interviews and sound checks today. We hope to narrow down the applicants by the weekend as we still have one or two more interviews tomorrow. So far we have a lot of talent and we hope to expand on that this summer. The goal is to continue growing and developing our broadcasting skills. We also hope to broadcast football games in the upcoming fall which is really exciting for us seeing that our station (U92, 91.7FM) has never done football before. Basketball season ended in an exciting way as Andrew, Chao, and I got to broadcast the C-USA conference championship. Not only did the Memphis Tigers win but we also got to witness history!!!!! The three of us were on hand for the raising of the banner which held the names and numbers of the three most winningest players in NCAA basketball history. Antonio Anderson 5; Robert Dozier 2; Chance McGrady 10. I must admit this may have been the most exciting semester of my college career. On another note three players from our university's club rugby team (flanker) were invited to play in the division two mid south all star game. As a part of the west side all stars our players Josh Gardner (flanker, 6), Bruce Eddy (2nd row, 4), and Lawrence "L.D." Davis (fullback, 15) all earned starting positions. The west side went on to win the game, I forget the final score. Anyway I am looking forward to the summer and playing rugby 7's with some of the guys, also I hope to find a place to live near the university as I no longer wish to live in the dorms...

Twitter

Started using Twitter.com. Not sure of the purpose yet...however i want to follow and debat with a fellow preds fan. We appear to thus far have opposing views/goals for the future of the preds, haha. Anyway I think I will dedicate the twitter page to that subject. Other than that not sure of the purpose most people seem to post very nonsensical matter. I feel that it is possible to post too much. It appears to be an outlet for individuals to talk about their emotions and feelings at a particular moment. Venting. People are sharing their feelings with the entire internet instead of or as well as close friends and family. I have not grown to fond of that yet and I don't see myself using twitter in that way. Is twitter a passing fad? I can't say for sure but I see signs that it might. I personally have grown weary of facebook.com. I never used the site all that much but due to recent changes I have grown tired of facebook. It seems that the site undergoes a face lift every other month. I have also heard several other people complain that the site has lost its appeal and is outdated...what could that mean. Is twitter the new it thing? Not solid on that just yet, so I will continue to use twitter as a communication device with forechecker/Dirk Hoag.

TWO SEEDed

Memphis basketball got a number two seed. A lot of people are upset. I wonder if it matters. Of course it is best to get a number one seed a play a 16 seed. However will coach Cal use the seeding as motivation? So the Tigers play in the West Bracket. Other notables are UConn, Purdue, Missouri, and I think Maryland and Miss St. are both sleepers to watch for. Either way the size and length of the Memphis team give the Tigers an edge over most competitors. Watch for Oklahoma, Louisville, Kansas, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina in the tournament as well. March Madness starts this Thursday when the Tigers take on CS Northridge. On a side note class should be canceled both Thursday and Friday...

Future

The future of journalism lies in social media. The current trend shows that more and more people are use blackberries and iPODs to attain the news. Outlets like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Blogger.com have become ways of relaying information instantly. An eye witness took photos of the Hudson River plane crash and began posting on Twitter before any media or press could arrive. Already we have seen a loss in newspaper sales, as well as less people tuning in to watch the evening news. Why is that? Do we have less time to sit down and get the news this way or is our attention span get shorter than ever before? Whatever it is current trends show that as Americans we want our news when we want it, we no longer have the time or patience to wait until the six o'clock news. Now the future lies in the hands of the consumer. In that blackberry across the internet is where the future of journalism lies. We can expect to see a turn towards more subjective and concentrated news. Which means we will see more and more news outlets, and a down turn in major corporate stations like CNN and FOX. Smaller stations will rise up and offer selective journalism aimed at a certain audience. This is the future of journalism and it will be here sooner than later. By 2010-11 expect this to be the norm. By this time every one will have an iPHONE and a laptop on them at any given time. People can not go a day without being connected, the younger generations will lead the way in communication technology. Already you see young people to busy sending text messages to bother looking where they are walking or driving. While it may seem annoying and ignorant or rude to older generations it is the future and this is where it is heading. The future of journalism will depend on journalist being able to reach out to these individuals through their social media devices.

Question to Shirley Raines:
What do you anticipate will happen to the University (Memphis) next year after a second consecutive year of tuition increase?

Would you be willing to take a pay cut in order to help fund basic University costs?

How do you feel about losing students to non TBR universities?

How do you feel about the current state of our University and the problems you may face during these troubling economic times?

What do you feel is the most important part of a students time while at the University of Memphis?

Grizzles' Mayo to be H-O-R-S-I-N-G around at All-Star weekend: This is a cool soft lead because it is fun and it also informs the reader. This year the All-Star weekend will have a new segment during the skills challenge, the game of H-O-R-S-E. The reporter obviously finds that interesting and the fact that Memphis' own rookie Mayo will be a participant is very exciting.
Rodriguez Admits to Use of Performance Enhancers: Plain, simple and to the point. I like this because the author lets you know who and what. Later in the story we find out the when and the why. Anyway the lead is very direct which in the case of a story like this one I feel the author made a good choice.

1/24 RUGBY

Though day today on the rugby pitch. We (the university's club team) played Ole Miss today and learned that we have a lot of room for improvement. The team comradity is there, but the know how and the skill is still in the beginning stages. Needless to say but we got our butts handed too us. Good news is that the game didn't count towards our Matrix play, in other words it was just a scrimmage game. That is it, I just thought that today would be a good day to blog about.

What is the purpose of journalism?

What is the purpose of journalism? From what I have learned thus far in my education and experience I feel that journalism can be broken down into several key elements. Information: a journalist must deliver information to the public. Timeliness: a journalist must deliver information in a timely manner so that the story remains relevant to the audience. Choice: a journalist must decide which stories to deliver and which to weed out. Not all stories are relevant to every audience, a stories relevance varies from person to person and place to place. Truth: a journalist must remain truthful at all times. Never is it acceptable to manipulate a story in any way, shape or form. By changing facts or details a journalist not only hurts him or her self but they also damage the relationship between the audience and themselves. Respect: this ties in with TRUTH, a journalist must have respect for the audience in order to gain the respect and trust of the audience. A journalist should never belittle the audience or the information.
That is all I have for now and I am sure I neglected to mention key aspects of journalism, I suppose that is what the comment box is for . Anyway I will be back soon.

Who?

Hello, my name is Nielsen Ferry and I am a broadcast journalism major at the University of Memphis, by way of San Antonio Texas. I would love to became a color commentator for a major network like ESPN, specifically h0ckey or baseball. I work for the university's radio station as a co-host for the morning sport show and I also play rugby with the club team here on campus. This is my first blog and I am eager to bring my views and opinions to the world wide inter-web.
